A New Footprint of GD in the Field of Aircraft Building in Europe

GD has all reason to be proud of another success in the field of products of their own design and manufacturing, as they delivered a conveyor system serving an aircraft cockpit production line to the french company Stelia Aerospace.

Stelia Aerospace is a company designing and manufacturing aircraft parts and units. Owner of the company is the Airbus Group. The production line established in Méault supports the final assembly of the cockpit of the A320 NEO aircraft.

The equipment consists of a system of three interconnected trolley runways (A, B and C zone) of which line A connects the part assembly with the final assembly of the B-line, meanwhile line C serves final inspection and storage.

On line A the cockpit is transported by a 300kg trolley with radio remote control. In the end of the part assembly phase the hoist of line A transports the cockpit ready for final assembly to the beginning of line B where it is placed in a holder specially made for this task. For final assembly the hoist moves to the first position of line B where it lifts the cockpit, already waiting in the holder, with the help of a turning device. The hoist is a product of the STAHL company specially designed with two speed levels and motor. The simultaneous movements of the two hooks is gained by mechanic synchronisation. 8 trolley with a load capacity of 1500 kg ensure that 8 workplaces are being served at the same time.

While the A and C line are operated by hand only, on line B hand as well as automatic operation can be applied. Automatic operation can be launched from a central control box. The trolleys transport the workpieces automatically to the next work station. Communication between the central control box and the trolleys is provided via WI-FI. The operator is informed about the actual state of the system by a graphic display. Naturally the display touch-screen serves also as control element.

Automatic operation is allowed only under fulfilment of appropriate conditions. If it is necessary to move workpieces at the workplace, this is possible in hand operation. An important safety element of the equipment is, that automatic operation is only permitted when two operators approve of the process at the same time.

This is justified by the great length of the runway system and the poor observability of the working area. Movement to the exact position is gained by slow-down systems an frequency inverter drives.

The hoist of line C connects at the last station of the endless circular runway of the B-line. On the runway operate two trolleys equipped with 300kg hoists each. One of them transports the cockpit on a curved runway section from line B and forwards it to the work station in zone C. The other trolley transports the cockpit on the straight runway section of line C to the storage zone.

The three interconnected conveyor lines designed, manufactured and established by Gép és Daru Kft. has been operating at Stelia Aerospace's since November 2016.
