Automatic cranes

  • Cranes serving a process or operating in a hazardous plant may need to operate without human intervention following the instructions of the process control system.

In order to enable the crane to move loads safely in programmed mode, it is necessary to design additional systems. The most important of these is a measuring and sensing system, which provides information on the current position and load status of the crane for the control unit. To determine the exact spatial position, three data are required: the position of the crane on the track, the position of the trolley, and the current altitude coordinate of the load. These data are provided by precision measuring systems built on the crane. The hoist of automatic cranes is equipped with rigid guidance, the so called rigid pendant, to ensure precise, swing-free load movement and precise positioning.

  • The automatic operation of the crane also requires special load-gripping equipment that is designed for the specific characteristics of the load to be moved (eg. barrel, container, workpiece, concrete beam, furniture board, etc.) and is able to detect the difference between closed and open, loaded and unloaded conditions. To automate the loading task, it is essential that the items to be loaded are in a predetermined position in the storage space. The system is further complemented by a high-definition video system that allows the operator to visually inspect lifting processes.
